Horse Humor

I drove up the hill and stopped in the left turn lane behind an old dodge truck. We were waiting to turn left onto the northbound on ramp of the 101. I looked out the driver's side window and admired the blue skies and seldom, scattered clouds. I stared at the seemingly endless miles of flat land only interrupted by seldom, scattered buildings. Had the signs on the buildings not read Harley Davidson Store, Patio World and Morgan Hill RV Park, I might have thought I was sitting in the middle of a picturesque scene from John Steinbeck's novel instead of waiting behind an old dodge truck on an overpass in Good Ol' Morgan Hill.

For a while I felt oddly connected to this area. The beauty of the tall grassy hills that looked close enough to almost touch certainly wouldn't be found anywhere else. And the peaceful roads that are rarely overcrowded don't exist within the borders of a cosmopolitan city. The sweet sound of my two toddlers giggling with excitement over a trip to Target made me wonder if I will regret not living in the place where the only thing I have to do is spend time with them.

The sound of a car honking jolted me out of my whimsical wonderment. The light was still red but apparently a man pulling a horse trailer knew the man in the old blue dodge and they were catching up on horse happenings.

I stared the back of the old blue dodge and noticed the license plate had a personalized frame. I always liked reading them and getting a good laugh at the humorous things people come up with for the drivers stuck in the car behind them.

From a distance the words looked strange and non-sensical so I slowly crept further and squinted to help out my 50/50 vision. I read the top part, "Dressage Horses" and was already confused. The bottom half read, "Do Half Pass Turns". I rolled my eyes and was immediately cured of my Morgan Hill nostalgia. There was no way I was going to spend the rest of my life living in the place where I couldn't understand the inhabitants sense of humor.
